Definition of Marketing

The official dictionary definition of marketing is "the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service," according to Merriam-Webster.

What does that really mean?

Everything that your company does is marketing. Your company name, your logo, and the different methods of advertising to reach your customers, all of these advertise to your chosen niche market. How customers view what your company does has the ability to influence sales either positively or negatively. Quite often marketing is under-utilized in offline and online small businesses. For example, it is common for offline small businesses to just take out a telephone book yellow page ad, although more and more are getting wise to the internet and using web pages. Marketing an online business requires various different marketing methods. Large and small businesses alike need to develop a marketing strategy. Finding that perfect marketing mix is key to being successful with your small business idea.
